Teeming with meticulously recorded detail, this print depicts a massive construction site in the midst of a city. The large hole of the site consumes the majority of the lower two-thirds of the image; the upper portion consists of roads and buildings. Scaffolding and building materials extrude from the site into the air. <br /> Signed on plate, recto, l.r.: "Muirhead Bone"<br /> Signed below platemark, recto, in pencil: "Muirhead Bone".

This work portrays a view across a river, whose surface is dotted with shipping. Drawn from a very high vantage point, a roadway is seen through a screen of nearly leafless trees at the bottom of the image; in the distance the far bank of the shore is congested with buildings, some towers--particularly a large one to the right of center--and smoke blowing away and to the right from the viewer can be seen.

A church spire rises in the center of the strongly vertical composition, flanked by a group of tall, thin trees on the left, and a pair of the same trees on the right. Gently rounded mountains rise in the background against a soft blue sky. A stretch of bright green grass dominates the foreground of the composition, and church-goers leave the rustic stone church via a tan-colored path in the middleground.
